Terms of Service

Last updated: October 2026

These are the rules for using EquationExplorer, written in plain English rather than legal boilerplate. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them.

Draft notice: this page is a draft written for review. It is not legal advice. Shank should have it checked by a lawyer before this site goes live for real families.

Who may use EquationExplorer

EquationExplorer is built for children in roughly grades 3 to 7, used under the supervision of a parent or guardian. A parent or guardian creates the account, agrees to these terms, and sets up each child's nickname and grade. A child does not sign up on their own, and we do not knowingly allow a child to create an account without a parent or guardian having set it up for them.

What EquationExplorer is for

EquationExplorer is a math-only tutor. It accepts typed or scanned math problems and walks a child through the steps to solve them. Every numeric answer is checked by code before it is shown; if that code cannot verify the math, the tutor will say so rather than show a guess. The written explanation around that answer comes from a language model, built to explain the verified steps clearly, not to invent numbers on its own.

What EquationExplorer is not

EquationExplorer is an educational aid, not a guarantee of grades, test scores, or academic outcomes. It helps a child understand how to work through a problem. It is not a substitute for a teacher, a tutor's judgment, or a parent's own review of their child's schoolwork.

Acceptable use

EquationExplorer is meant for math homework help, and only for the child it was set up for. Please do not:

  • Use the account to submit anything other than math problems.
  • Try to bypass the daily question limit, the math-only focus, or the verification step.
  • Share a child's login with anyone outside the household.
  • Use the service in any way that is abusive, fraudulent, or against the law.

Daily question limit

Each child account has a daily limit on how many questions they can ask, five by default. A parent can raise or lower this limit for their own child inside the PIN-protected parent area. The limit resets daily.

Account suspension

A parent can suspend or reactivate their own household's access at any time from the parent area. We can also suspend an account on our side, for example if we believe these terms are being broken, if we suspect misuse, or if we need to pause access while we look into a problem. Where reasonably possible we will let the parent know why.

Changes to the service

We may update, improve, or change parts of EquationExplorer over time, including these terms. If a change meaningfully affects how the service works, we will update this page and, where appropriate, let account holders know.
